First Day of School

This week, my little man started preschool. It's one of the things I said I'd never do at this age... I've said that about several things, as I think most of us moms have! Nathan needed to be around other kids in a setting where he was away from me, where he could learn to play with a group, learn to trust another trustworthy adult, and where he could learn some great lessons in how to have fun without mommy by your side. Because I've stayed home with Nathan and have done so much play, tot school, etc right with him, he has a hard time playing without me by his side and we hoped preschool would help that. We're only a week in, and at two days a week, it's too hard to tell, but he is learning things already! The teacher told me Thursday that he'd learned which back packs go with which kiddos and what the kids names were. Considering the back packs are brought in, and hung on a wall and only used during diaper change, I was pretty impressed. Nothing gets by this little one! He also woke up this morning talking about Jonah being swallowed up by the big fish. Apparently Nathan enjoys the Bible teaching and pays attention! :) Enough talk, how about a picture or two of Nathan on his first day of school!!! 22 month update and photos with Leo the Lion

I can't believe I'm so late posting this update!!!!! Our little man is 22 months old and is growing so much every day. Just the other day, he heard me say to Chad that a friends' house looked big and he replied... "it's huge!" It's amazing what he picks up on by listening to other conversation! Doesn't he look so big?

and finally at 22 months. Such a sweet kiddo!!!

Nathan is doing so many fun new things these days!!! I hope I remember everything. He has learned to "thank Jesus for your food" and will say, "dear Jesus, thank you for our food. amen" sometimes saying "thank you for the peas, the broccoli, ... naming whatever is on his plate. It's so sweet to see him learning to be thankful at a young age.

Nathan's growth seems to have slowed a bit, although he seems taller and taller every day. I think he's around 28 pounds and 34 inches tall. He's comfortably wearing 2t shirts and many although the sleeves are a bit long. His pants depend on the brand but between 18-24 months and 2t. He's in a 7.5 wide shoe and loves his new Saucony sneakers!

Funny story... yesterday in Target, a different one than usual, we walked past the pharmacy and he said, "mommy Tom not at this Target, you at a different one." I about lost my jaw as it hit the floor with his observation. You see, Tom, is our pharmacist... Another funny story from the same trip? We walk past the bra section and Nathan shouts out, "you see BOOBIES!!! Lots of boobies!" Behind my stifled laughter I explained to him that those weren't boobies, rather bras. He look at me and said, "well mommy, you put the bra on the boobies". Out of the mouths of babes. I promise there were more than a few people around us chuckling!

Nathan has started singing full songs on his own now including the pitch. He sings ABC's, Father I Adore You, Twinkle Twinkle, Jesus Loves Me, and many others. He's also started singing along with the DVD's, radio, and with us. I love hearing his little voice.

Tuesday, Nathan started preschool! That was a huge step for us, one I didn't think we'd make so early, but we thought about it and prayed about it for a while and thought it would be the best thing for him socially and regarding his fears of being separated from mommy. He cried for about 2 minutes and then had a great 3 hours. He really likes his teachers and told us all about his first day! He'll go 2 days a week this year and we're looking forward to him being in a Biblically based program with 9 other kiddos his age.

He's found his nostrils in the last 2 weeks too. I thought he'd be 2 before he ever picked his nose, but thanks to a cold and friends with colds, he's learned that his finger does indeed fit up there. He says, "mommy, I get the boog. that better". I cracks me up every time although I try to discourage the finger placement!

Nathan has begun napping and sleeping much better these days. We've tried a new technique and it's working! I did this gradually, but he's learned that crying from his crib doesn't bring mommy or daddy in to get him any sooner. Instead he's learned to happily play in his bed until we arrive in his room... in the am no earlier than 8am. Some days he's sleeping until 830! He's still going to sleep at night around 730pm which gives him the right amount of night time rest. During the day, he's in his bed from 1-330 regardless of sleep time and he's come to enjoy the alone time most days. I'm happy that he's able to recharge again during the day!

Nathan is a huge fan of all things related to cars, books, towers, soft/fuzzy things, his dog Bailey, animals, trains, talking, "beesa van", Izzy, strollers, balls, picking anything off a tree or bush, his new racing tower for cars, jumping, slides, water, did I mention talking, crocs, smoothies, gummy vitamins and fruit snacks, water fountains/falls, Wonder Pets, Psalty, being sans shorts or shirt, tot school, puzzles, dumping things, mommy, daddy, dumping things, milk, just to name a few... :)

He is not a fan of large crowds of people, being separated from mommy/daddy, sitting in his high chair without a shirt on, carousels, fish, pasta, people in his perceived "space", performing, keeping his fork on his high chair tray, diaper changes, dark rooms, and I'm sure I'm missing some...

During the photo with Leo time, he decided Bailey would make a better partner in his chair. Down Leo went and up he called Bailey, "Bailey, you come up here right now, beside Nay Nay... please." With a split second of coaxing, she happily obliged!

I'm pretty sure the last time she was up in this chair was when he was a mere 34 weeks old... in this photo...

My how they both have changed!!!

Little man, I'm sure there are many things I'm forgetting in this post, but no worries, they are etched on my memory for sure! We love you SOOOOO much Nathan!

Wordless Wednesday

Tot School

Nathan is 22 months old.

This weeks tot school was so much fun!!!!! We started out with group tot school with some friends which we'll do every Friday. This week it was at Kristin and Colton's house and she led some great activities including bowling! Nathan loved this and it was a great precursor to our family/friend bowling outing on Saturday. This activity focused on hand/eye coordination as well as turn taking.

Also at group tot school we worked on cutting playdoh. The kids were so cute sitting around the little table. Nathan still likes to stab the playdoh but understands the concept of cutting. We also colored fall leaves as a group! Thanks Kristin!

Back at home, we played with Nathan's new "racers" as he calls it. He loves to send his cars flying down the spinning tracks. While doing this we worked on colors of cars, size (too big/too small to fit in the slots), waiting, and counting.

Then, Percy, our owl puppet came to join us. Nathan is just getting in to puppets and they are so much fun to use for modeling of kind words and kind hands (this seems to be our theme these days). He's beginning to grasp what kind means and does well with Percy and our other puppet friends. :) He's beginning to transition this into play with others too! Nathan is such a rough and tumble little guy and sometimes he forgets that tackling and tickling are very different! Hopefully Percy will help us out with that! :)

Also, we worked on stamps to practice counting, gross motor and fine motor, as well as self control! It's so much fun to "crash de stamp" instead of pushing it down on the paper in a controlled manner. :)

One of my favorite things about this week was all of the outdoor fall activities we did. We incorporate learning into everything we can, and I think most parents do this without realizing it. While at two different farms this week, we learned some great outdoor lessons... like...

loving the feel of corn, throwing it, digging in it,

and laying in it! This was such a fun sensory activity!

On the second farm, Nathan learned more about tractors and big wheels and loved looking at the tractor when the hayride was stopped and going (of course when it was going he was seated).

He got to touch so many animals here and loved learning about their feel. This is a baby chicken.

Hmmm, there were several lessons here... what a cow eats, what a baby cow looks like... and what an electric fence looks like and how not to touch it! Thankfully he didn't even have a chance but he did learn that "dat fence will shock you and hurt you".

Our last stop on the hayride? A hay maze. This maze was much bigger than the corn maze we did earlier in the week but we had fun learning about dead ends, the feel of the hay, and how good mommy is at carrying a tired toddler over the hay (not through the maze) and to the end of the maze!

The last day of tot school this week, we had tot school in our big tent. Nathan thought this was so much fun!

I finally found some of the oreo matchin' middles and they were much tougher than I thought they would be for my little man. We stuck to a few easy shapes and he liked them but said he would rather eat them. :)

Wordless Wednesday

Fun on the Farm

On Sunday, we headed to a local farm to enjoy the slower pace of country life on a farm and to take part in some fun fall festivities. Of course Nathan was elated to see the pumpkins. That surprised me because you might remember his traumatic pumpkin pose last year...

Nonetheless, he has forgotten his mommy stuffing him in a slimy cold pumpkin and has quite a fondness for them this year. He loved trying to pick them all up and saying "biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig one" when they were too heavy. Eventually he found one that was just his size.

And one the perfect size for mommy to carve and put him in... just kidding. I don't think my 22 month old would have any piece of that!

There's always time to stop and smell the flowers. In fact, the other day we were at the park and Nathan said, "mommy, you want to stop. smell the roses? Yeah" So funny. I'm not sure where he heard that, but it was hysterical!

Nathan loved climbing on all the old tractors and driving them! He was also fascinated by their huge wheels.

Of course, all city folk are going to gather round the tractor for a family pic...

This cow train was so cute! The cows are made out of barrels and Nathan loved riding around the farm in his very own barrel!

Of course Mommy and Daddy squeezed into the cows for a ride too!

The second time, Nathan decided he wanted to go by himself, not just solo in the barrel, but solo on the cow train. So Chad and I watched from a distance as our little one looked so grown up on his own mini roller coaster. He had a great time and we got all teary eyed at how big he's getting, and sooooo fast!

Nathan got lots of Daddy time on Sunday and was loving it. I adore watching them together.

There was a huge silo full of corn and it was so much fun to play in.

We buried Chad first and then just about everyone in the silo became one with the corn in some way or another.

The corn maze was a huge hit and the kids loved running through the "lanes". Nathan liked to touch the corn and we just loved running and watching him navigate the kiddo maze like he ran through corn every day!

Nathan did have a few quiet contemplative moments... it was so unusual to see him sit so still, so of course, I had to take a picture!

We are so excited that fall is here!
